Personal Research Journey

As I have posted a few times before, growing up in rural Southern Mississippi as a child, healthy eating habits were a foreign world to me. I was able to eat any and everything I wanted and asked for. Once I moved to the North (New York), I begin to see the difference between myself and my friends as well as felt the pains of being teased and taunted because of my weight.

If I can prevent this from happening to other young children, I will do all that I can. For this reason, I choose to focus on Nutrition. I further thought about the biggest factor in Nutrition that not only I struggled with but my family as well and that lead me to the ABC's of Healthy Eating; the ABC's being Accessibility, Bargain, and Convenience.

So far I have learned that there are major barriers to the ABC's of healthy eating and there are many programs and resources being proposed to alleviate these barriers to make it more easier for families to live a healthier lifestyle. Searching for scholarly articles on the Walden Library site has been a bit of a challenge in that many of the articles do not have a widespread of active programs that are currently being utilized by families. I would also love to read research regarding the success rate for families when the ABC's are incorporated into their everyday lives regarding healthy eating habits.

Any and all advice, suggestions or comments are welcome on this topic as I am eager to learn as much as I can. Please do not hesitate to post useful resources related to the ABC's of Healthy Eating or your own personal stories regarding this topic!

  1. Tasha,
I am very interested in your topic. Are you aware of the CACFP- the Child and Adult Care Food Program? It is a federal food program with highly restricted guidelines on what is appropriate to feed young children and adults. This year they are looking to cut out high fat foods, sugary foods, and processed foods in favor of fresh fruits and veggies and natural proteins. They might have some information on their website to assist you in your research simulation.I also have a friend who is a nutritionist. I can ask her if I can give you her contact info if you would like. Just let me know.

  2. Tasha,
I can really appreciated your topic. Good nutrition is so important and I feel that if it is implemented in the early childhood years it will become a habit and many children will never experience bad eating habit. I am looking forward to learn more on this topic.

  3. Tasha,

Good nutrition is so important for all children. Given the state of our economy in the United States, it is a current issue that needs to be addressed. On the flip side, we have to combat childhood obesity also.

In regards to searching for research through Walden's Library, I've had trouble finding original research in a timely manner. I found the ScienceDirect database to be helpful.

  4. This is a great topic because childhood obesity is a huge problem in todays society. The numbers of childhood obesity are increasing at an alarming rate and we as a country need to take back control over the health of our children. I believe that if we end obesity related trends we can stop it from transitioning into their adult life.
