Excellence and Equity of Care and Education for Children and Families (Part 2: Availability, Accessibility, and Affordability)

The National Black Child Development Institutes website is very simple and to the point. There are 7 main tabs which none contain outside links. The “initiatives” tab contains information about the 6 different programs that NBCDI supports. When I clicked on several of the main tabs and their sub links I received this message, “Our website is still under construction, and we are adding more information about our initiatives, partners, and resources every day” or the information that was displayed was outdated. Ultimately one can assume the website is still a work in progress.

I decided to look more into the T.E.A.C.H Early Childhood D.C. program. The Teacher Education and Compensation Helps (T.E.A.C.H) project focuses on addressing the issues of under-education, poor compensation and high turnover within the early childhood workforce.  Scholarships are given to early childhood educators with the purpose of completing coursework in specific early childhood education area to help increase their pay.

T.E.A.C.H. is built on four components education, scholarship, compensation and commitment. The program helps ECE earn college credit hours in the early childhood education field as well as offers financial support/scholarships towards college cost. Through the program ECE earn a bonus or growth in pay after completion of a year of education. Finally ECE/professionals make a commitment to continue to serve in the early childhood education field.

I signed up for the newsletter initially at the beginning of the class but have yet to receive a newsletter. Has anyone else following this site received a newsletter? I went ahead a registered again to receive a newsletter using two different email accounts.

I think that through the T.E.A.C.H Early Childhood D.C. Project, steps have been taken to ensure educators in the field have an opportunity to expand and grow their knowledge of the field thus being better prepared to teach and serve children, hence giving children a fair chance to a high quality educational experience. Learning about the T.E.A.C.H Project has definitely aided to my understanding of creative and pro-active measures that are being taken to enhance equity and excellence in the early care and education field.

As a new insight regarding issues and trends I noticed a small area containing information on literacy in the African American culture. It is evident that African American children are not as strong in literacy than other cultures of children. The NBCDI has partnered with Reading is Fundamental (RIF). Together the two organizations have designed an early literacy training program specifically meant to help early childhood educators build their capacity and resources to develop and enhance early literacy skills of African American children. Through this program family members are able to work together with educators to understand the importance of early literacy and to ensure their children are on the right track to becoming literate individuals.
